OUTSTANDING HORSEMANSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

The Outstanding Horsemanship Scholarship is sponsored by the South Carolina Horse Council and recognizes SCHC members who have shown outstanding scholarship, leadership qualities, and a commitment to participation in equestrian activities and or community equestrian organizations.

Applications will be submitted via a Google Form found on the SCHC website under RIDER OPPORTUNITIES.
SCHC recommends gathering all required documentation prior to filling out the online form. The number and value of scholarships awarded may vary from year to year as a function of available funds and number of qualified applicants.

Definition: horsemanship, noun

  1. the art, ability, skill, or manner of:
    1. a person who is skilled in riding a horse.
    2. a person on horseback.
    3. a person who owns, breeds, trains, or tends horses.

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT APPLICATION (including all additional documents specified above) is:  March 15, by 11:59pm EASTERN Standard Time

APPLICATION QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Applicants must be a current member in good standing with (Youth membership = $10)
  2. Applicants must be in 11th – 12th grade (Junior or Senior) or currently enrolled full-time in an institution of higher learning at the time of application While in-coming freshmen are preferred, students in any class-year who are pursuing higher education are eligible.
  3. Applicants must hold legal residence in South Carolina.
  4. Applicants must have a minimum 5 GPA or higher and must submit proof of GPA through transcript, grade card or similar documentation.
  5. Applicants may participate with any breed in any equestrian discipline – Hunt Seat, Western, Dressage, Endurance, etc. and may ride in any class division (JV Beginner, JV Novice, Varsity Intermediate, Varsity Open, Junior, etc.).
  6. Applicants must submit a one-page letter detailing their engagement with equines past – present – future.
  7. Applicants must submit a resume (2-page limit) detailing their activities related to
    • Career Goals / Objectives
    • Education (School/s attended – Courses of interest/relevance – GPA)
    • Employment (Organization – Job Title – Job Duties)
    • Volunteerism (Organization – Activity/Event – Level of Participation)
    • Hobbies/Leisure
    • Achievements / Accomplishments / Awards / Organizational Memberships (Leadership positions)

If you have difficulty uploading documents in the Google Form, you may submit them separately via email to info.schorsecouncil@gmail.com All documents must be clearly marked indicating that they are for the SCHC Outstanding Horsemanship Scholarship Application, must carry the applicant’s name clearly, and must be received by the March 15, 11:59 pm ET deadline.

Applicant Statement:
My signature below indicates that I accept the following terms and agree to abide by these conditions should a SCHC scholarship be granted to me:

_I swear to the best of my knowledge that all of the information in this application is truthful, complete, and accurate.

 _I agree to represent SCHC and its standards in everything that I do and will conduct myself in a professional manner at all times.

 _I agree to promote SCHC wherever and whenever and to assist SCHC as possible in future fund-raising efforts to help ensure the longevity of the SCHC Scholarship Program, so that others may benefit as I have.

 Selection Procedure:

  1. The SCHC Scholarship Committee will meet in the spring and select the recipient(s). There are five $1,000 scholarships
  1. Awardees will be selected on the basis of
    1. demonstrated significant and committed engagement and interest for pursuance with horsemanship activities. (This can be through an equestrian-related degree or classes, participation in an intercollegiate equestrian team or club, an equestrian related internship, job, volunteer work, or any other commitment to continued involvement and education in equestrian sport.
    2. the extent to which they have participated in and contributed to the life and welfare of the school and/or community through extracurricular activities will be taken into account.
    3. evidence of character, personality, and leadership is sought and will be reviewed with care
    4. clarity, quality, and suggested potential of the application
  1. The scholarship recipient will be notified by telephone. (Applications not selected will be notified by mail).
  1. All funds will be deposited directly with the educational institution upon confirmation of enrollment for the then-current academic year
  1. The name of the recipient will be made public, with permission, through SCHC.
  1. All other expenses beyond the awarded sum are the sole responsibility of the recipient.

Scholarship Amounts:
There will be a maximum of 5 recipients each year for a total of $5,000. The award is contingent on the number of qualified applicants. Anticipated amount is $1,000.00 / award with a maximum of $2,000.00/year to any recipient – based upon the abovementioned condition. Recipients may reapply for renewal for subsequent years, though preference will be given to first-time applicants. Furthermore, there is a $5,000 lifetime cap awarded to any individual.
